Challenge:
To create various permanent and temporary shelter solutions for
people and equipment during the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary,
Alberta. Following the Games, all temporary buildings would need
to be relocated and reused across western Canada.
Solution:
ATCO Structures provided shelter for a variety of purposes including
a 50,000 square foot broadcasting facility for ABC-TV, relocatable
accommodations for more than 2300 media personnel and other
members of the Olympic family, permanent and relocatable facilities
for 600 competitors, VIP centres and other buildings such as
offices, ticket booths, kitchens and medical facilities.
Details:
Following the Games, the 500 homes used to accommodate the media
and Olympic family, which had been purchased by the Government
of Canada (200) and the Province of Alberta (300), were relocated
throughout western Canada for student housing (Mount Royal
College – 150), senior citizens and other housing needs.
This ATCO solution ensured that surplus housing from the Olympic
Games did not occur in Calgary.
