Challenge
To provide a warm and comfortable living space for personnel
enduring the harsh winter months in Western and Eastern Siberia
including the remote Chukotka Peninsula, where temperatures
can dip below minus 50 degrees Celsius.
Solution
These four base camps, housing up to 44 people each, were designed
to meet the client’s strict branding requirements. Each
of the permanent camps consist of four main areas including
two 22 person accommodation complexes, an office complex and
a kitchen / diner / recreation area - linked together by all
weather arctic corridors and complete with air conditioning
for the warm summer months.
Details
ATCO provided onsite construction management services and worked
with local contractors and workforce to install the camps,
which saved the client time and labor costs. ATCO Structures
also supplied the water treatment system and generators for
each of the four camps.
For this project, ATCO developed a unique rafter roof system
to minimize on site work and installation costs. Roof panels
consisting of rafters were constructed at the factory and shipped
by rail to their final destination. This system allowed for the
roof to be installed in less than three weeks, reducing time
spent outdoors in the extreme environmental conditions.
