Challenge
The owners of this copper mine north of Santiago wanted to create
appealing and comfortable accommodations, situated close to the
mine site, in order to attract and retain qualified personnel.
The site was a challenge due to its remote location in the Chilean
Andes (1,600 meters above sea level), and heavy snow
loads, which would limit productive time on site.
Solution
Tecno Fast ATCO completed this 1,000 person housing facility in
only seven months, receiving an award from the client for having
the best safety and environmental record of any contractor.
Details
There was no plot of land large enough or level enough to accommodate
the entire camp, so an innovative three-tier facility was conceived
and two camps were built.
"Hotel Mina" accommodates 680 permanent mine operator
and mine construction personnel. The dormitories are connected
by two 15-metre elevators, linking personnel to the main kitchen,
lounge and recreation areas without venturing outside, which
is often snowy, windy and cold. The two common recreational areas
offer ten metre high ceilings with a skylight, natural growing
plants and amenities such as ping-pong and billiards, and an
exercise room and gymnasium. Bedrooms are finished with hotel-style
carpet to create a warm atmosphere and keep noise levels down.
This project also incorporated the refurbishing of existing client-owned
units for the creation of "Camp Chacay," home to approximately
300 permanent mine administration personnel. The units were renovated
and private bathrooms were added. The units were then transported
to their new location and exterior finishing was completed on
site.
